The King Left

  • In early 2005, The King Left said goodbye to their friends in Ithaca, NY and headed for the bright lights and promise of life in New York City. What they found was the same biting cold and bitter loneliness they’d left behind.

Furiously writing in their Brooklyn rehearsal space, the group began crafting a stark and dynamic, yet hopeful, collection of new songs, while regularly performing throughout Manhattan. But ironically, it was a trip back to Ithaca (during a series of dates with New York Citys Nightmare Of You) when things started to really materialize.

The King Left was approached by NOY drummer Sammy Siegler (formerly of Rival Schools, CIV, Gorilla Biscuits) about the possibility of producing a few tracks. The pre-production sessions that followed gave birth to The King Left EP (released January 19, 2005 on Dimestore Records).

Recorded in Brooklyn with engineer Ian Love (Rival Schools), the EP showcases The King Lefts earnest, pleading vocals, insistent guitars and pulsing rhythm section.

The King Left EP found great success at college radio where it was 3 most added on the CMJ (College Music Journal) charts. It peaked at 69 on the CMJ Top 200 and remained on the chart for two months.

The band recently recorded another EP in Brooklyn, NY with Sammy Siegler and Ian Love on board again for production and engineering duties. A limited edition artwork version of the New York Nothing EP was released on January 25, 2007.

Wintersleep

  • With a name that fits a Nova Scotia-based band rather well, Wintersleep formed in 2001. Initially, they were part of the Nova Scotia label and artists' collective Dependent Music, which released their first two albums, 2003's Wintersleep and 2005's untitled full-length, as the band was just getting rolling. The band graduated to the big time -- that is to say the major labels -- in 2006, when Wintersleep signed with Labwork, a subsidiary of EMI Canada. Members Paul Murphy (vocals and guitar), Tim D'Eon (guitar and keyboards), Jud Haynes (bass), Jon Samuel (keyboards), and Loel Campbell (drums) were able to see their first two releases get a second look on their new label, complete with bonus tracks, but in 2007 Haynes left the group. A quick replacement was found in Mike Bigelow, and Wintersleep soon returned to store shelves with their 2007 album, Welcome to the Night Sky. In 2008 the band was nominated for a Juno Award, Canada's highest honor in the national music scene.
