Chuck Johnson - (Set time: 10:30 PM)
Chuck Johnson
Chuck Johnson is a composer and musician residing in Oakland, CA. He approaches his work with an ear towards finding faults and instabilities that might reveal latent beauty, with a focus on American Primitive guitar, experimental electronics, and minimalist composition. Recordings of his work have been released by Strange Attractors Audio House, Communion, Amish, Merge, Umbrella, Phaserprone, Squealer and Three Lobed. Johnson views his current work - both electronic and acoustic - as folk minimalism. In 2010 he was featured on the Tompkins Square compilation Beyond Berkeley Guitar and in 2011 his solo acoustic guitar debut A Struggle Not A Thought was released on Strange Attractors Audio House. In May 2013 his follow-up solo LP Crows In The Basilica will be released on Three Lobed Recordings.
Tom Carter - (Set time: 9:30 PM)
Tom Carter
Tom Carter's solo electric guitar work sculpts a rich landscape of immensely-stacked grit and beauty, weaving interlocking strands of melody into towering long-form (and often high-volume) drones. Although best known for his work with iconoclasts Charalambides, which he co-founded with Christina Carter in 1991, Carter has recently focused on his eponymous duo with No Neck Blues Band co-founder Pat Murano; Sarin Smoke, his duo with Pete Swanson; and his solo performances and recordings, which have increasingly featured visual components - including collaborations with filmmakers Martha Colburn and Margarida Garcia.
D Charles Speer - (Set time: 8:30 PM)
Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, David Charles Shuford is the body behind Speer. After moving to New York City in the early 90s, Shuford forged a path as a musician adept in multiple sounds and styles. A member of the No Neck Blues Band for 15 years and running, he has also engaged his mind and fingers in other groups such as Enos Slaughter, The Suntanama, Egypt Is The Magick #, and Coach Fingers. Through a steady series of home recordings, the Speer trajectory began to take shape in the early 2000's. Assembling of masses of vibration bearing wood was needed to fulfill one man’s band obligations. The full instrumental ensemble of a Middle Eastern belly dance troupe and a selection of voices from a Cajun band were thereby smashed together to engender a sound wildly alive. After a self released debut solo LP Some Forgotten Country in 2007, Speer then sought out a public performance outlet with the killing-est band in the land, the Helix. His second solo LP Arghiledes brings a return focus upon acoustic instrumentation, with a still healthy dose of electric effects and speaker fry.
