Nation Beat - (Set time: 10:30 PM)
Nation Beat
Which nation, and which beat? What makes this group special is that it offers no simple answers. They are rhythm gatherers, harvesting the fruit of 500 years of cultural crossbreeding, which is why the sounds of the northeast of Brazil and the southern United States blend together so seamlessly; NPR's All Things Considered music writer Banning Eyre calls them "the most original and alluring fusion group I have heard in years."

At the heart of Nation Beat's Legends of the Preacher lies a totally original 21st century fusion between thunderous Brazilian maracatu drumming and New Orleans second line rhythms, Appalachian-inspired bluegrass music, funk, rock, and country-blues. Their explosive live show -- which is frequently known to burst into crowd-wide Carnaval-style drumming and singing -- is attracting music fans from a wide demographic: bluegrass and country music fans, Brazilian music lovers, outdoor festival-goers, and pretty much anyone who loves to dance and loves great music.

Legends of the Preacher also features three mesmerizing collaborations with 2007 GRAMMY(R) award winners The Klezmatics. The work with The Klezmatics further extends their work as world groove excavators and mad scientists, and the two groups connect sonically and spiritually to provide elegance, whimsy, charm, and soul to these groundbreaking fusions.

Following in the path of Modiba's humanitarian relief efforts in Darfur, anti-malaria work with Malian star Vieux Farka Toure and overall commitment to the social and economic empowerment of Africa and its Diaspora, 10% of the proceeds from Legends of the Preacher will benefit Recife, Brazil-based NGO Corpos Percussivos, a school of music and culture for underprivileged youths.
The Stick-Ups - (Set time: 9:30 PM)
The Stick-Ups came to be as a natural manifestation of David Luther's love of rhythm and blues. Not the modernistic R&B that often gets paired with "Adult Contemporary," but the seriously old school kind that laid the groundwork for rock n' roll at a time where saxophone was lead guitar, lyrics were truly dirty, and groove was everything. It is our mission to take all the frenetic, sexy, raunchy, irreverent energy of that music and convey it to you in a manner that impels you to jump from your seat and grind your neighbor, a mission that we take very seriously. This is no benign background music. This is the s**t that made housewives fear for their teenage daughters' virginity, regularly thrashed crowds into an orgasmic frenzy, and led many folks to a newfound awareness of their hips. The quest to attain such results is no small task, but one which we engage with enthusiasm.

So who's the we? Featured in the band, besides David Luther on tenor saxophone and vocals, are Bennett Miller on upright bass, Joel Arnow on drums, and a rotating cast of guitar players, the original of which being David Bailis. This particular performance will feature the talents of Al Street.

we started playing together at the beginning of 2008. through a monthly residency at rockwood music hall in manhattan, we quickly came to care deeply for and believe in this band.

arvo part, stevie wonder, gillian welch, david bazan, paul motian, tom petty, miles davis, sigur ros among many many others have greatly effected our musical hearts.

each member of this band has toured all of the world in different projects. we all believe that this band has the same traveling destiny. we spent much of 2009 working on this album, in the hope that it will aid our sonic presence in the world and help us play to ears far from our home.

we all play music for a living and we will play this music all over the earth for the rest of our time here.
