When Violens (vy-lenz’) began plotting their winter tour, they decided to create something to share with the audience overseas while working on their debut album. The New York band has explored a myriad of sounds and styles this past year on their self-titled EP (Cantora), a 7” for the track “Lighting Lightning” (Chess Club, UK only), and a slew of remix collaborations with the likes of MGMT, The Very Best, Lansing-Dreiden, White Lies and many more.
Violens wanted to help new fans piece together a complete picture of their diverse influences from 60’s pop psychedelia to the slick studio production of 80’s new wave, from punk and metal to the dance club bass they were raised on in Miami… The result is their Winter Mixtape, and it is available for free at http://www.violens.net
The mix introduces four songs from Violens’ forthcoming album alongside some wildly unique mash-ups which blend their own performances with music and lyrics of My Bloody Valentine, The Byrds, and Wire among others. You'll also hear remixes of tracks from their debut EP, Violens’ own remixes of White Lies’ “Unfinished Business”, a new collaboration with Caroline Polachek of Chairlift, and a gorgeous acoustic cover of Saint Etienne’s “Avenue”.
California native Ramona Gonzalez first began her transcendent minimalist dance-pop escapades in the privacy of her own home in Los Angeles after performing with bands in both the Bay Area and the L.A. area.
With the aid of her multitrack cassette recorder and whatever keyboards, drum machines, and other instruments that were available to her, she very quickly developed her own unique sound and began performing live in the L.A. area under the moniker Nite Jewel.
Later teaming up with Emily Jane Kuntz and Corey Lee Granet, the Nite Jewel project became a three piece band, touring alongside the likes of Deerhunter, Cold Cave, Neon Indian, Little Dragon, Glass Candy, and Telepathe. The Nite Jewel sound has been likened to that of a warped, lo-fi version of Late-80’s Freestyle Electro sensation Debbie Deb and has also found appeal among not just the ‘indie rock’ & ‘experimental’ crowd but also among avid listeners of hip hop, funk, disco, & soul. While very fond of these aforementioned genres and artists, Nite Jewel gathers much of her inspiration from the likes of Los Angeles Free Music Society’s avant garde experimentalist Tom Recchion, obscure UK hari krishna new age electro-acoustic duo Woo, and the sublime ambient electronic music of groups like Germany’s Cluster and Italy’s Sensations Fix. Nite Jewel never hesitates, however, to cite 90’s R&B pop groups such as TLC & SWV as influences who left an indelible mark on her music sensibilities as a teenager.
Silk Flowers play minimal, spooky, narcotic synth music that combines the dark-day electronic pop of early Depeche Mode with the cemetery-obsessed intensity of Samhain. Formed in New York in the summer of 2008, the band brought together Peter and Avi from Soiled Mattress and the Springs with Ethan of Car Clutch. Their forthcoming LP on Post Present Medium (run by Dean Spunt of No Age) comes out in June.
