Nyle X Naysayers, who are an NYU alumni Hip-Hop band that made their mark with their viral video, Let the Beat Build, which has had over 1 million views (http://vimeo.com/4189528). The video garnered tremendous buzz, and was a featured piece on websites ranging from Gawker to Nah Right to Kanye West's blog, KanyeUniversecity. A few weeks later Nyle was interviewed on MTVs 'It's On With Alexa Chung and premiered Nyle x Naysayer's new song 'GangReal' in a live performance. In January Let the Beat Build was featured as #4 on Spin Magazine's top 25 videos of 2009, beating out Lady Gaga. Performing with The Naysayers, Nyle has been able to translate this growing buzz into performance success. He closed out his college career by headlining a sold-out concert which featured Hip Hop staples Asher Roth, Kidz In the Hall, 88 Keys, and Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg. The band has also shared the stage with legendary acts such as Dead Prez, Black Thought from the Roots and Pharoah Monche at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival.
Gato Loco Coconino -- To hear Coconino is to feel what it must have been like in those days when a travelling circus came to your backwater town; suddenly, out of the dust, there is a promise of mystery, pageantry, eroticism and violence. Seduced by the sharp edges of this relentlessly driving 11-piece dance band, you catch glimpses of impossible places, impossible times.
Formed in 2008, the group released it’s debut album, “Coconino” in 2009. In 2010, they traveled to France, as artists-in-residence at the Festival des Hauts Garonne, in Bordeaux. They played over a dozen shows in the course of 2 weeks, numerous festival stages, and recorded their second album, to be released on Winter and Winter records in January, 2011.
“Exotic and simultaneously urban.” (La Monde; Paris, France, July 2010)
"It is rare to hear music that makes you want to dance and whose arrangements are also a marvel of invention" (downtownmusicgallery.com)
"A barely-controlled chaos is the sprawling combo’s accustomed state and their pressing task is to harness that raucous, celebratory atmosphere." (all about jazz, april 2010)
Their debut album was recorded and released in 2009.
“Reflects the vibrations of New York” (Sud-Ouest; Aquitaine, France, July 2010)
SEAN T HANRATTY invokes a musical era of America past, conjuring up the ghosts and spirit of the great blues players of the Misspissippi Delta, while adding an undeniably original element, which he says, is "Brooklyn". SEAN is a Brooklyn native whose music blends sewer caps with swamplands and blue skies with broken glass. His songs have their roots in the blues and they spring forth with a sound that's unmistakably soulful. The Bowery Poetry Club in NYC's eclectic East Village provided the setting where poetry, music and the old school beatnik spirit coalesced into the formation of SEAN'S band, THE MIGHTY MIGHTY. This band features bassist MIKE BARILE who brings harmonious counterpoint and sonic strength with his beautiful bass lines and drummer DAVE MILLER brings unbridled energy, enthusiasm and rock solid technique to the drum set. With his vivacious band mates, SEAN T. HANRATTY has formed the musical trio which is the perfect compliment to the unparalleled passion he puts into his music and lyrics. SEAN T. HANRATTY and the MIGHTY MIGHTY are set to release their eagerly anticipated first album, "Weird Lucky" on June 5th 2010 at Bowery Poetry Club. In the meanwhile, the band has been heard at various venues in NYC such as Bowery Poetry Club, Sidewalk Cafe, Spike Hill, Piano's, Parkside Lounge, house parties, block parties, bath tubs, and back roads. In short, SEAN T. HANRATTY and the MIGHTY MIGHTY make the kind of unforgettable music that will stand the test of time. "An Art-throb with the voice of an angel who smokes 15 packs of camel unfiltered a day." Reverend Jen Miller "Sung with a seasoned, confident and gravelly voice, Hanratty's tunes are raw and biting. Even the song titled Chocolate Kisses is Badass."
EMEFE (em-ef-ayyy!) is a band lead by Miles Arntzen, a young musician based in New York City. Miles got the group together in December of the year 2009 after beginning his studies in the royally awesome Jazz Department at New York University. Inspired by his musical heroes in Antibalas, who encouraged him to study the life and music of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and Medeski Martin and Wood, who taught him about the importance of the individual and the self in music, Miles started recording demos of the tunes that became EMEFE.
It is important to note that Fela Kuti, the man who created the music we play, lived in a different time - he made his music as a response to the injustices that ruled everyday life in Africa (specifically Nigeria) in the 70's and 80's. His music was about not becoming zombies under the authorities. He sang about not letting the corrupt government officials bring his people and African people down. So why does EMEFE play this music? In the same way that Fela used this music as an escape from and confrontation against the authorities, EMEFE uses it to escape the inner authority inside all of us, the doubts and worries that are there inside our minds every day. Our mission is to use our music to help ourselves and our listeners let go of those trivial negatives that bring us down. We want to fight the inner authorities that we put on ourselves, each for our own specific reasons. With deep respect for Fela Kuti, we are excited to play the music he created - afrobeat - because, simply, it makes us happy. We hope it makes you happy too.
EMEFE also takes inspiration from the improvised music made by Medeski Martin and Wood and other areas of music and life to produce music that makes the listener want to dance in a happy frenzy. Check out our afrobeat funk tunes and give some feedback!
The band could be called an afrobeat band, with influence from Fela Kuti and Antibalas. It could be called a funk band, with influence from MMW, The Roots, and the Dap-Kings. But what's in a genre? We are, quite simply, EMEFE.
