The Motor Tom - (Set time: 9:30 PM)
The Motor Tom
The Motor Tom is, first and foremost, a New York City band. 2016’s debut LP Super Sexy Space Station (Hard Pack Records) was named one of the Ten Best releases of 2016, and the band’s concise-yet-raucous live performance earned them the honor of being one of the Ten Best Shows of the same year (Adam Bernard, Adam’s World). Super Sexy Space Station is comprised of 11 hook-laden, danceable “indie rock [songs] with a heaping dose of personality.”

Bucking trends is something The Motor Tom does effortlessly. As the NYC music scene further embraces down-tempo, texture-driven productions, The Motor Tom deliver huge choruses and hummable melodies designed to stand the test of time. Produced by Greg Lattimer (Albert Hammond Jr’s Yours to Keep), Super Sexy Space Station is an explosive collection of “hits,” songs built on simple musical principles: make it catchy, make them dance, be honest.

The Motor Tom’s live concert combines the welcome feel of a campfire with the spectacle of an arena rock show. Front man Nick Schupak has been compared to the “three Davids (Bowie, Lee Roth and Byrne)” and guitarist Andrew Henry Harding expertly tacks between squeaky-clean rhythm and thrashing vintage lead. The rhythm section, powered by drummer Luca Bertaglia and bassist Chris Agar, pound a driving brand of Rock ‘n Roll as adeptly as they support tight, lilting ballads, which conjure images (or memories) of teenagers making out lighted by a disco ball. A generous compliment of synths, pianos and pads seamlessly incorporate East Coast 90’s hip-hop character into The Motor Tom’s sound, which rounds out a band that boldly embraces everything that is so beautiful and complex about the city they call home. It’s a sound that makes them difficult to pin down and impossible to forget.
